I decided to have the “landing page” not be the blog. I may change my mind about this later, but for now, the blog is in its own directory.

I had been working on a design for the website BEFORE I decided to go ahead with WordPress. I like the design well enough, though I am not finished with it. Now the trouble is to translate that design over to the blog. For now, I am going with a free theme, and will tweak it over time.
